Single Mums In The Military May Be Recalled At Any Time
from: About Single MumsMany women know when they are recruited by the military that after their induction is completed, they could be recalled and sent on a mission at any time. It can create a disastrous family situation if a single mother is the sole source of support for her kids. While a single mother in civilian life might have daycare issues on a daily basis, single mums in the military, if deployed, have to make babysitting plans that can span months or years.
In the event of a divorce, child custody is always the most important issue to take care of. Years of legal negotiations may be proven useless when single mums in the military are deployed. The non-custodial father, or other members of the extended family, might be appointed to care for the child that they didn't expect to care for. If the divorced couple are in the military and both are deployed at the same time, the problem becomes even more difficult.
The predicament is resolved in the military by commanding all soldiers to create a Family Care Plan that can be enforced in the event they are called to active duty. This plan is a prerequisite for everyone, even single mums in the military. It consists of a few forms that must be filled out by all single mums in the military, and kept up to date.
The family care plan, is a detailed plan a soldier is required to make beforehand, in the event they are recalled to active duty, and the forms consist of the following:
A power of attorney, which gives legal authority for the guardianship of the kids. It establishes who the custodian is and what their rights are. It permits that relationship to exist for long periods of time.
Certificate of acceptance as guardian or companion: The form asserts that the custodian has accepted their responsibility and has been informed of the stipulations in the family care plan.
Application for uniformed services identification card DEERS enrollment: This provides military concessions to the kids while the parent is on active duty.
Authorization to start, or change allotment, for active duty personnel: This allocates a portion of the soldier's pay to family members to help them cater for the kids, while the parent is away.
Letters of instruction: This is all the information, relevant to the soldier's family for legal, medical, and household purposes. Things like tax information, service providers, bills that need to be paid, car registrations can all be provided in the letters of instruction.
Family care plan counseling list: A form that validates that the soldier has been guided on the mandatory nature of the information needed in a family care plan.
Although single mums in the military might not wish to think about the idea of being recalled, it is a situation that is happening more and more often for members of the military. Having a thorough and up-to-date family care plan prepared at all times can minimize some of the strain of being deployed and help guarantee that the children's requirements are met.
